The Lions won their first game in Australia, at the Gabba, against the Carlton Blues 14.14.98 to 13.13.91 tonight.
It was a strange game full of ebbs and flows, ups and downs, ins and outs and some oddly paid free kicks and free kicks that oddly, weren’t paid.
The Lions came out in the first quarter and blew the Blues off the park. It was some of the most dazzling footy the Lions – nay, any team – has played all season. They had some graceful runs of play that lead to a couple of highlights reel goals. Daniel Merrett even threw his hat in the ring for goal of the year with a goal seemingly grubbered through the big sticks from the fourth row of the Gabba seating.
It turns out a Mick Malthouse spray is better for your overall strength, skill and endurance than a radioactive spider bite because the Blues came out for the second quarter a completely different side. They even managed to boot six straight goals against us.
Carlton came back strong for the third quarter too, kicking us while we were down. Our ruckman, Trent West went off early after injuring his knee. West’s ouchie promoted Merrett to the ruck but in the end it mattered very little.
Josh Green, Dayne Zorko, Jonathan Brown, Joel Patfull and Daniel Merrett all terrorised the Blues in the end. Zac O'Brien even booted the goal that put the Lions back in front on his debut. It was their skill, some bizarre ill-discipline from the Blues and in all honesty some dubious and puzzling umpire calls that gave the Lions a well deserved and hard fought win.
Did you enjoy the Lions win? How could they improve and what positives could they take from today’s win?
