Q-Clash 8 was a stunning spectacle tonight. The Brisbane Lions waltzed away victors with a comprehensive 16.14.110 to 8.8.56 win over the Gold Coast Suns at the Gabba.
The game was won and lost in the first quarter. The Lions were on fire from the first bounce, running circles around an insipid Gold Coast outfit who didnít seem at all interested in playing footy. Our Mozzieís affected a crippling blitz on the Suns and our Irishman, Pearce Hanley, delivered the coup de grace.
The skies opened up mid way through the quarter and spewed down a ferocious deluge but that didnít slow down the Lions at all. In fact some would say it improved their game a little.
Gold Coast were completely starved of the pill during the first quarter and were only allowed one mark. Brisbane absolutely dominated the Suns in every aspect of the game and it clearly showed on the scoreboard after the first break with the Lions up 7.7.49 to 1.2.8.
After the bloodbath that was the first quarter things calmed down a little bit. The fifty-or-so point lead was maintained throughout the by the Lions with the Suns barely offering any resistance at all.
At the end of the match Tom Rockliff had 47 disposals and a goal while Pearce Hanley ended the night with 45 disposals, two majors and the Marcus Ashcroft medal. Zorko too was impressive with 32 disposals, 2 majors and 4 behinds.
The Suns are clearly struggling without the work rate of Gary Ablett Jnr but they need to find a way to perform without him otherwise their finals aspirations are doomed.
Hopefully this match is a sign of things to come next year for the Lions.
Was this strong show against the Suns an encouraging sign?
